Yes, there is definitely considerable patronization afoot in current TV advertising... an over-compensation factor, if you will. Surely, the representation of mixed-race couples is out of proportion to reality, at least the reality most of America experiences. And, as a viewer, I find this blatantly forced display of "inclusion" more than tiresome.

Being queer, I've observed a similar kind of patronization in advertising's representation of gays. If I have to listen one more time to the deep-throated, condescending huckster saying, "Keep being you," I might just lose my shit and throw something at the tube.

However, advertising companies have but one goal... sell the product! Reading anything more insidious than that into their motivation is a bit of a stretch.

After all, it takes big bucks to produce quality TV commercials and buy ad time. So, yeah... advertisers are hedging their bets, attempting to touch every base at once. But, let's get real... If it wasn't creating commerce, they'd change course on a dime.
