Yes, despair over what seems a hopeless, too painful to bear situation can trigger thoughts of ending it all. But that’s seldom the whole reason for suicidal thinking. The hopelessness is more often rooted in depression, which invites the situation to be the impetus for the action.

And then, there’s the artistic temperament. We sensitive creatives are more likely to be both queer and to suffer depression. Not to mention that we tend to be more dramatic… so sweeping gestures make more sense in the midst of pain and misery.

I’ve lived with depression for more than 50 years. Being honest and open about my queerness saved my life. But, even when things are going pretty well, it can be difficult to find meaning and purpose. Many times, instead of triggering suicide ideation, something to fight for and/or against is what keeps me motivated to stay alive and keep using my talents for positive purpose.
