Yes... but, don't you think that the complimenter is also expressing the compliment to make themselves feel better about themselves? So, if it's not received graciously, it's sort of an insult to the complimenter.

I, like you, have had a lifelong challenge accepting compliments, regardless of their sincerity. This is because I hold myself and my work up to such lofty standards and tend to compare my accomplishments to the seemingly far-greater accomplishments of those I admire.

I'm still working on it. I've learned that the best response is not an insincere "thank you," but a sincere compliment in return... "That's very kind (or generous or nice) of you to say that."
