White "exception?" No. The presumed perks of whiteness are the norm, not the exception. We are fish and our privilege is the water we have been swimming in from our first day of life. We know no other environment. We don't take water for granted. We're not even aware that it exists. A lifelong liberal humanist and activist for progressive causes, I was very aware of the injustices perpetrated against people of color. However, I wasn't fully aware of my privilege until I acknowledged my own Whiteness and started paying attention to all of the advantages it provides me. So, "White advantage..." Yes. Perhaps that term wouldn't provoke so much defensiveness. However, recognizing White Advantage necessitates fully acknowledging the constant disadvantage experienced by every Black and Brown American.
