While I understand and agree with the general stance of this piece, the statement above is simplistic and misleading. The Black Lives Matter movement started after the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012 to express outrage over police brutality and other systemic policies that discriminate against and threaten black Americans. So, by the time the George Floyd murder took place, BLM had been protesting discriminatory practices for a full 8 years. Floyd became an immediate face for the BLM movement. Too, the obvious inhumanity of his murder became the catalyst for many previously uninvolved Americans, many white, to join the cause. But, the protests of the summer of 2020 were about systemic racism and disproportionate police treatment of blacks, not strictly about George Floyd's murder. In my opinion, this fact is important to this article making its point.
