While I found the Jodi Foster iteration of True Detective to be creepy and disturbing almost to the point of being intolerable, Foster’s portrayal was what kept me engaged. Wrinkled and genderless, flawed in the most human ways, she commanded the screen even in simmering silence. Interesting that you mention Nyad, in which the lesbian lead character is portrayed by straight Annette Benning while, in True Detective, the lesbian actor (Foster) portrays the straight Liz Damphers. It was both refreshing and impressive to see each actor display her range in those pieces.
