What happened to a literal interpretation of the Bible when Matthew 7:1 doesn't mean what it says?

Pastor Gabe imagines himself as a close friend of Jesus, but I can just as easily see him in the crowd with a stone in his hand demanding that the woman caught in adultery be killed and then scowling at the compassion that Jesus shows her.
