Those who attended Woodstock '99 were not hippies. They were, for the most part, entitled, hedonistic partiers. And, the producers of the event were more interested in making a profit (which didn't even enter anyone's mind the first time around) than in providing a transformative experience for the attendees and the performers.
So, yes, our culture has gone through an extreme shift over the last half century, one that has made another Woodstock difficult, if not impossible, to recreate. Then again, magic still happens. And, there is no fixed or reliable recipe for creating a magical experience. Remember that Altamont happened only a year or so after Woodstock. So, ugliness has always been part of the American landscape. And, the America of the late-60s and early 70s was just as divided as it is now.
