Laura Jane Grace speaks truth to power

My favorite Feminist bumper sticker

I’ve long been amused by a certain bumper sticker. It reads, “Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History.”

My amusement isn’t the least bit cynical. Rather, it derives from the unequivocal truth of those six words along with the suspicion that a whole lot of people probably fail to get it.

And, ironically, there are probably an untold number of folks who claim to admire and respect certain rebellious, headstrong female history makers but would never condone such unacceptable behavior from a woman today… especially if that ill-behaved woman happens to be trans!

The statement also makes me chuckle because, more than likely, I know the woman whose vehicle displays the bumper sticker. If she’s not already an acquaintance or a friend, I certainly know and appreciate her spirit.

You see, I’m not at all interested by or attracted to well-behaved women. The women I gravitate to are not quiet, demure, or complacent. In one form or another, they live to claim their personal power. They love to shake things up.

One such woman…

Before this week, I’d never heard of Laura Jane Grace. Odd that I’ve remained unaware of her for so long. After all, I was a music business professional for 45 years. So, I’d like to think I’m at least somewhat current as to who’s who and what’s what.

Too, I spent a substantial slice of my recording/performing career as a gender-bending glam rocker, intentionally using my androgyny for shock value, all the while conducting a personal campaign to blur gender stereotypes.

But, that was a half-century ago. I haven’t worn mascara, or glitter, or a feather boa in a very long time. Perhaps I’ve become a bit of a boring fuddy-duddy in my old age.
