This sentence, in my opinion, sums up why humans have felt compelled to invent religion in the first place, and why every culture has independently sought to explain the mysteries and wonders of life and the world through mythology, while attributing creation to a higher power (or powers).

Religious institutions were created as mechanisms to impose moral principles on societies and control behaviors... in other words, they thrive by taking power over individuals, demanding their obedience and financial support.

Anyone who claims to know the whole and only truth is to be avoided as one would avoid a rattlesnake or a rabid wolverine. The actual truth is unknowable. And, if there is a God, it's (not He or She) incomprehensible and indescribable. And, I'm perfectly fine with that.
