This is the kind of statement that makes American voters cynical and nihilistic. You state that a Democrat in the White House hasn't been able to stem the increased rightwing oppression of LGBTQ+ folk or the extreme restrictions states are imposing on women's reproductive rights. But, the gate for those draconian trends was blown open when a so-called Republican president was allowed to nominate three of the justices to fulfill his promise to evangelicals that Roe v Wade would be on the chopping block.

Had Hillary Clinton made those SCOTUS appointments, cake makers and website designers might not be so free to discriminate against same-sex couples, trans folks might feel more free to enter the restroom they feel comfortable using, advanced placement for black history might still be a thing in Florida, and states might not be able to get away with voter suppression policies and racial gerrymandering. So, while yes we are far from being a perfect democracy, votes do count and make a very real difference in the lives of ordinary people... unless, of course, you don't consider queer and trans folk or persons of color ordinary.

And, if you don't think that a Democrat president's competency in the midst of a deadly pandemic didn't save the lives of countless ordinary people, you're not paying attention to what actually matters. For many ordinary folks, it was literally life or death.
