There's a direct correlation. Except that Kaepernick's movement was endorsed by a lot of his fellow players, while Kluwe only had one comrade in the entire league who would take a stand with him. Racism is reprehensible, yes. But pro athletes, coaches, and team owners are still for the most part homophobic. That's why we don't hear much about Kluwe, while Kaepernick is a folk legend.
