Interestingly, when I was brutally assaulted, first in 1972, in Wisconsin, and once again in 1976, in London, I didn’t even consider reporting the incident to police, for similar reasons that would incline a trans woman to remain silent today. A man who chose to wear makeup and dress in androgynous attire in those days couldn’t trust the police or the judiciary to treat the situation seriously or him with any respect. The perpetrator would always be believed before the victim and there was always the chance that I would have suffered further humiliation.
