Once, I had the experience of a pastor’s wife saying she would pray that God provides me everything I need when, in fact, she was just getting herself off the hook for something she’d promised to provide. It felt like she said it to assuage her guilt for not following through. In her mind, a promised prayer was a perfect substitute for real, tangible action. Which, in a word, is bullshit.
