Of course, this is disgusting. That anyone has the time and impetus to berate a 10-year-old child and condemn the father who loves and accepts his children is unfathomable. However, the overwhelming majority of Americans are far more tolerant, if not accepting. Yes, we've lost a couple of supportive percentage points in the last 3 or 4 years. But, still, those unconscionable comments are coming from a tiny but loud segment.
So, although it may feel like we are on the "cusp" (as you put it) of becoming a country of haters, and we must always be aware of the threat and stand up consistently for love and acceptance, I don't think we'll be falling into the pit of intolerance as a nation. Certain states, yes. But, as a nation? I don't think so. Keep the faith.
