Love for a queer or trans relative doesn't always translate into standing up for them when it counts. The non-binary son of Montana's governor pleaded with him not to sign anti-trans legislation. The governor ignored his son and buckled to the ignorance of his party.

But, a major reason attitudes have evolved re: same-sex marriage and LGTBQ+ rights is because folks have realized that they personally know (and like) queer and trans people, which makes them human beings, rather than sub-human reprobates.
