It's so easy to wallow in despair, to believe that one person can't make a difference, that all of our noble efforts have been in vain. I am in grief. But, then I remind myself that I've been an activist for nearly 60 years. Every single win took years to affect. And, there were dozens of heartbreaking set backs along the way.

Still, amazing progress has been made. I'm living in an entirely different world now, a much more inclusive, accepting world than when I plunged headfirst into the fray. I've had to come up for air at times, paddle to the edge and catch my breath. Occasionally, I've felt like giving up, like I was completely out of gas.

But, writing always sorts things out for me. Thanks for the kick in the keister, Jim. I needed it.
