It takes real humility to even consider the possibility that the dogma we were indoctrinated with might not actually be true. So, good on ya for stepping back, gaining some objectivity, and admitting your flawed humanity. And, BTW, "making sense" is not the point. Some things simply aren't meant to be understood.
