Interesting that DeYoung calls this concept of marriage a "new morality." While marriage certainly should represent a pledge of commitment, the romantic love aspect is not essential to its success... nor is a lack of romantic love )or even non-monogamy) an automatic disqualifier.
Traditionally, marriage was more of a business partnership, a negotiated deal struck by families to pool their resources and further their common blood lines through procreation. Those were the commitments... any love involved was a bonus.
The contemporary fiction that one person can or should fulfill every single need for another (and visa versa) is both unrealistic and contrary to human nature.
