I’m talking about the pendulum swings of cultural evolution. I know the timeline of the era. I was there and I went back to check my historical accuracy. Roe v Wade was decided in 1972 as the Moral Majority (or, as Nixon called it in 68, the silent majority) was gathering steam. The most violent activities of the Weather Underground and the Black Liberation movement took place in the 1970s. Each is a reaction to a reaction, as the Defend Equality movement is also a reaction to the conservative reaction to same sex marriage and Black Lives Matter.
Perhaps my example is a bit of a reach. But.., Personally, I think it’s helpful to put these cultural swings in historical perspective. We tend to believe that what we’re experiencing today has no precedence. Not so. And, we should be careful not to overreact because doing so can only lead to more violence and unnecessary suffering, while setting our cause back.
