I’m going to have to be more observant of the “nod” as it relates exclusively to us old fellas. I habitually exchange nods with pretty much anyone, regardless of gender or age.
I am, however, hyper aware of the subtle grin we queer men exchange when recognizing a tribal member in a public place. It’s a very meaningful silent code.
BTW, you say you listen to “country and western music?” I lived in Nashville for a lengthy period and wrote songs for a number of popular artists. And, it says a whole lot about your age that you still use a term that went out of music vernacular a half century ago. Just sayin’… country has been simply “country” for decades.
