If the original offense had been hateful rather than a simple demonstration of ignorance, I would agree absolutely. Then again, had the intent been to cause harm, I would have known better than to waste both time and breath trying to rehabilitate the relationship. The surprise and disillusionment was in his defensiveness and posture as the victim, rather than recognizing his responsibility as the perpetrator.
