I once had a conversation with a MAGA diehard who supported the deportation of all undocumented immigrants.

"Who would frame and roof the new houses?" I asked him. "Who would harvest the crops, bus the restaurant tables, and clean the hotel rooms?" (Of course, I was deliberately mentioning the kinds of labor that most white Americans wouldn't be so keen about.)

This was his response... "Stop handing out food stamps! If you and your family are hungry enough, you'll take any job you can get to put food on the table."

Apparently, there is still a pervasive belief in so-called "conservative" circles that liberalism has made the US into a welfare state that encourages people to make more babies, then sit on their asses and collect government money.

The erroneous assumption about an untapped labor pool comprised of millions of lazy grifters is one thing. To say that these non-existent people should be starved into taking minimum wage jobs is more evidence of mean-spirited conservativism.
