I guess, for many young folk, attending an outdoor rock concert has less to do with the music or the performers and much more to do with the social aspect, being free to act out. In the case of the Chicks, there is a whole female empowerment element that pervades, which is great. I doubt that Lyle Lovett inspires the same kind of devotion on a cultural level. At his show, the audience should be there to hear great songs rendered by a unique performer with a band of top notch players... but, perhaps we're naive to make that presumption after all.
