Hasn't religion always functioned to provide such a worldview for segments of human society? Supposedly intelligent humans have always sought explanations for the mysteries they encounter and observe. Religious mythology and dogma provides simplistic answers to questions that could be (or have been) fully explained scientifically, in terms incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't speak "science." Beyond that, religion portends to provide explanations for the unexplainable, mysteries that science has yet to explain. No wonder that so many humans find comfort in religiosity.
