Do you think the right actually wants us to find (or invent) pronouns they’ll find more difficult to use against us? Certainly, “they” (see how I use the word) will always seek to use our language against us (“woke” being one recent instance).

But they/them makes it so easy for “them.” The potential othering is built right into the words. Meanwhile, they/them is confusing and awkward in conversation.

So, why shouldn’t we consider other options… not to placate the bigots, but to strengthen and clarify the identities of an already persecuted group?
