As you may remember, Tucker, I wrote an enthusiastic piece about Will & Harper in October. I was pleased that the responses from trans readers were mostly positive. However, one person said that they couldn't watch the film because they would never have the privilege and safety of traveling the U.S. with a film crew accompanied by a beloved celebrity friend.

While I understand that point of view, this comment also sort of emphasized my point... that Will Ferrell putting his friendship with a trans person on display has to be opening up some minds to the humanity of trans folk. After all, so much of Farrell's film work (Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Old School, etc) has very masculine/sophomoric appeal. Many of his fans probably have no firsthand exposure to trans folks. This film gives them the opportunity to "get to know" Harper. And, I can't fathom anyone not liking her.

As you so astutely point out, the dynamic balance this film maintains between self-deprecating humor and sincere pathos is the key to its appeal. It's just like real life, if you know what I mean. That Harper is so open about not passing is also refreshing, not to mention realistic.
