As the queer son of a WWII vet, I relate strongly. My father, who died 3 years ago just short of his 95th birthday was always accepting and supportive of me. And, he was eager to understand and discuss my identity and experience. Every Memorial Day and July 4th, he proudly displayed the Stars and Stripes and beamed as he stood with his fellow Air Force brothers and sisters at the annual Independence Day symphony concert. He personified patriotism in a way that bigoted conservatives could never comprehend. Miss you, Dad.
